    Good day, sunshine
    Two gift-y things today - a lovely slashy card from [info]accioslash (which I'm going to discreetly not put on display until after our little party on Sunday, given that there will be children in attendance), and my [info]happy_trekmas fic. "Fate Doesn't Play by the Rules," George Kirk/Christopher Pike, Jim Kirk/Leonard McCoy, NC17, alternate reality to AOS, fun characterizations. *g* Thanks so much!

    Also, tonight was the last LIS class ever, whee! Plus I mailed off the last family package, mailed overseas cards, cleaned toilets (have to get a bunch more cleaning done tomorrow afternoon though), and conducted a test of the emergency black bean salad making system for SO, who had forgotten that his dept. party is tomorrow night (and he probably won't actually go as we're supposed to do something else tomorrow, but he still needed to contribute a dish). Tomorrow I pick up the research papers for the upper-div class (although realistically I won't grade till Monday) and try to collect/bring home whatever I'll need to start prepping spring term syllabi. Ideally I won't have to drive up again until January (well, except for going up for a dinner Saturday night, but that doesn't really count, does it?).

    Worked a bit on the Yuletide fic, which is feeling very sprawly in a not-so-wonderful way, and posted a ST drabble (which can be read as either AOS or TOS):

    The third thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me: Hangovers...

    "Draco, you need to get up. You'll be late for work." a voice whispered in his ear. Draco groaned and turned his head toward the speaker, regretting it not a moment later when a herd of dragons began doing the Can-Can in his head.

    "Am I dead?" he moaned.

    "No, but you should be after all that eggnog you drank last night. Didn't I warn you George always spikes it with vodka?" Draco cracked open an eye and stared at Harry and Severus, both of whom had amused smirks on their faces.

    "Just kill me," Draco told them, "I could use a Hangover potion right now."

    "Hermione took the last of it for Ron and I haven't had a chance to brew more. You'll have to cure it the muggle way." Severus told him smugly. Draco looked at him, stunned, as Harry set a large glass on the bedside table.

    "Tomato juice and hot sauce. Will definitely cure what ails you. Who wants steak and eggs?" Harry asked. Draco turned green and bolted for the bathroom.

    The fourth thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me: Sending Christmas Cards...

    "Oh this is beyond ridiculous!" Draco exclaimed, staring at the pile of cards covering every available surface of their living room.

    "You promised you'd help me." Harry pouted.

    "I promised to help you send Christmas cards to a few select people! Not the whole bloody wizarding community!"

    "There are muggle ones here as well." Severus stated from his desk where he was tackling a stack of cards from former Hogwarts staff and students.

    Harry scowled at him, "Fine, if you aren't going to help you can sleep in the guest room tonight."

    After a moment of silence, Draco shuffled over to the chair across the desk that Harry was using and picked up an unsealed envelope.

    "Can I at least use magic?"

    "No." Harry told him, "Get licking."

    "I'd rather be licking anything but envelopes right now." Draco muttered, thinking he hadn't been heard.

    "That can be arranged. I believe our former Minister Fudge needs his arse shined." Severus stated, getting angry on Harry's behalf. Severus was getting sick of Draco's general whining and upsetting Harry. Draco's face flushed red and he silently began licking envelopes.

    Hours later...

    "Hear that, Harry?" Severus asked. Harry looked up at him.

    "What's that?"

    "Blessed silence." Severus smiled, pointedly looking at Draco. Draco scowled at them both.

    "I warned you not to lick your lips after all those envelopes. Not my fault your lips glued shut." Harry laughed. Draco turned his glare up another notch, which had no effect on Harry. Harry waved his wand to clean Draco's face and proceeded to snog him senseless. Draco forgot his anger after that, "Thank you for helping me."

    "You're welcome." Draco smiled, still dazed from the kiss.

    Maybe this won't be so bad, if it keeps putting a smile on his face. Draco thought to himself...

    On the first day of finals week, my students gave to me...
    A whole bunch of papers and quizzes to grade. Um, yay?

    Have graded one set of quizzes. The second set's deadline is midnight tonight, so I'll get onto those tomorrow (they don't take long) and then start in on the papers Wednesday. Also dictated almost 2K of Yuletide fic (am trashing the first attempt, but I think this one might go somewhere). Finished wrapping all gifts that require mailing, although have not yet boxed them to ship. SO and I bought Juno a doghouse; may have to persuade her into it the first few times, we'll see. Cooked tuna cakes and cabbage (for tonight) and braised chicken (for tomorrow).

    Now I need to reply to a colleague who's invited us to dinner on Saturday, and type up 3fan edits. That'll be it for tonight. Tomorrow: laundry, walk Juno, study for exam, take exam.

    Ficlet today is a rarepair, yup, and one I'd never written before:

    Animated film rec: 9, sort of vs. Dragon Hunters
    9 9 []
    Rated PG-13 for violence and scary images.
    Runtime: 79 minutes.
    Director: Shane Acker
    Summary: When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.


    My notes: BFF ordered me to watch this film 'cos she had seen a couple of scenes from it and fell in love with the visuals. So I did.

    I liked it fine, especially the visual side, yes. Landscapes, the dolls, those factories and machines. If you like steampunk, go for it! I did find it very, very pleasant for the eyes. Not quite an eye candy 'cos it's all greyish-brownish and raw and dusty but it looks really nice.

    I even liked the story for the most part. It's quite charming, and the story of a small individual becoming a hero in order to save the world, figuring things out, gathering courage and strength, well, it's cliché of course but it's a sure win as far as modern action/adventure goes. But at the same time, I found it annoying. I mean, if you have such a well-established heroic cliché, there's no need to make it even more cliché by making the villain a Hitler in such a non-metaphorical way. I mean, sometimes it's OK to believe that your spectators aren't completely stupid, so there's no need to put things in their mouth and chew for them. Sometimes you can create a more far-fetched metaphor, say, as Tolkien did in LotR or as Hiromu Arakawa does in Fullmetal Alchemist, and your audience will get it. Or on the contrary: make him Hitler, no a Hitler-like something. Don't dance around trying to side-step every dangerous thing.

    Another thing that annoyed me was 7 at the very end of it. The dolls are more or less sexless, more boy/men-like than girl/woman-like but whatever. I liked it that the story wasn't about love, that it wasn't about how family saves everything -- which, let's be frank, Hollywood feeds us so much as to make one want to stay single forever. But then [spoiler]7 acquired some distinctly lady-like expressions, nearly batting eyelashes. WTF? Will they now hold hand and knit baby dolls or something?[/end spoiler]

    And this leads me to the following. I liked Dragon Hunters much better (my review). They are seemingly nothing alike, Dragon Hunters and 9. It's just that they both are about small people saving the world and that something in the animation looks similar to me. So, while I'm ready to rave about Dragon Hunters for ages, this review is about 9 and regretfully, I'm not prepared to squeal about it. Yes, I enjoyed it. Yes, it's a real pleasure for the eyes. But I expected more. The animation made me expect more originality from the plot, and it might be completely my fault that I was so ready to fall in love but in the end, merely liked it. But like it I did. Give it a try!
